Science and Flavour

At Bridge & Barn we recognise the importance of healthy soil free from harmful chemicals, which has led to adopting regenerative farming processes on the farm.

What is Regenerative Farming?
Regenerative farming actively works on building healthy soils and ecosystems to improve long-term agricultural productivity and environmental resilience. It involves practices such as minimizing soil disturbance, integrating livestock, increasing biodiversity, maintaining soil cover and keeping living roots in the soil.  It emphasizes natural processes and reduces reliance on synthetic inputs that can harm soil and water. It works in conjunction with nature’s design rather than against it.

Beef Quality
The grain and soya that is used to produce conventional meal for cattle must be imported; in general, it is genetically-modified and intensively grown using chemical fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides. Large numbers of hectares of rich natural forest may also be destroyed in order to meet the demand for these crops internationally.

Dr Lucy Williamson, an award-winning nutritionist and gut health expert, had this to say on the importance of omega-3 in pasture-fed beef:

“100% grass-fed pasture-fed beef has up to 300 times more omega-3 than conventionally-reared beef, which is significant.

We all eat a lot of omega-6 without realising it because its in every seed oil and it’s in just about every food there is. What we’re trying to do is reduce the amount of omega-6 we have because we have a lot and increase the omega-3 because we don’t have nearly enough and it’s that omega 3 that is the heart-healthy and anti-inflammatory oil, it’s an absolutely fantastic nutrient.

We know that flax seeds and walnuts and other oils have a reasonable amount of omega-3 but those two really specific types that we know are particularly beneficial for our health are readily available from animals.”

All of us are lacking in omega-3 so that’s why the advice is to try and eat fish twice a week and one of the fish to be oily because we should get enough omega-3 if we do that. But this recent understanding that cattle within regenerative farming systems have this much more favourable fat profile where it’s much, much higher in those beneficial omega-3s is really exciting. In dairy its similar but nothing like the benefit you get in beef, it’s a really key point the fat profile. I’m always encouraging people to try and source that kind of meat because of that.”

“Farming in synchrony with nature to repair, rebuild, revitalise and restore ecosystem function starting with life within the soil and expanding to life above.” – Dr Allen Williams

Its Effect on Beef Quality
Research has shown that grass-fed beef is lower in saturated fat and higher in omega-3 fatty acids and certain vitamins as compared to conventional grain-fed beef; making grass-fed beef a healthier option.  Environmentally, our customers will know that what they are purchasing is having a positive impact on the environment.

So, if you want healthy, nutritious beef products for your family, the pasture-fed beef at Bridge & Barn is a great choice. Feel free to Contact Us and make the switch to healthy beef.
